What Is Agentic AI
Not a chatbot, not a copilot. The difference is who decides what happens next.
The word 'agent' has been applied to everything from a scripted phone tree to a fully autonomous system, which has made it nearly useless. Here is the distinction that actually matters: an agent decides its own next step, and then takes it.
If your process needs a human to decide, do not build an agent. Build a copilot.
A chatbot follows a script
The path is drawn in advance. If the customer says something off-script, the bot fails — usually by asking them to rephrase, which is a polite way of saying 'ask a different question.'
A copilot suggests
Generative AI drafts, summarises, and recommends. A human reviews and takes the action. Useful, safe, and fundamentally limited by the human's throughput.
An agent decides and acts
It reads the request, plans a route, retrieves what it needs, calls a tool, checks the result, and either finishes the job or escalates. The human is the exception path, not the bottleneck.
Which is why governance changes
A copilot that is wrong wastes a minute. An agent that is wrong issues a refund. That is not an argument against agents — it is an argument for guardrails, and it is the whole reason our security service exists.
